Every year, kids all around Auckland and Whangarei enter our challenge. The challenge: to write your very own story! The best stories are then picked by our judges and the winners are mentored by our amazing children’s author, Maria Gill. And the very best part… the winning stories are published into this year’s storybook!

This storybook isn’t just any old storybook though. No, this is a very special storybook that is sold to raise money for Starship Foundation and the Magic of Reading programme. Here’s some big numbers:

  • Over 75,000 books have been put in the hands of young patients since 2008
  • Over $200,000 has been raised for Starship since 2008. Wow!

Starship Foundation and Barfoot & Thompson have a very special relationship. We, at Barfoot & Thompson, think the work that they do is awesome and we love to be able to support it in any way we can.

More than 120,000 New Zealand kids who need medical help pass through Starship Hospital every year.

The Starship Foundation commits to raising more than $6 million annually. They use this money to do great things like buy new medical technology, give support to families and fund vital research that can save lives. All of this money is raised through the generosity of the New Zealand public and through organisations like Barfoot & Thompson who donate money and time.

Barfoot & Thompson don’t only help Starship through Young Authors Challenge. We also raise money for Starship in lots of other ways! Go to our Supporting Starship page to see more about what Barfoot & Thompson do for Starship.
