Terms and Conditions

  • The competition is open to all primary and intermediate school classes and individual children from years 1–8 in Auckland and Northland.
  • The competition is open to children of Barfoot & Thompson employees. Immediate family members of the judging panel may not enter
  • Entrants must come up with an idea for a short story and develop it into a story that is relevant to children aged 5-10 years old with an inspirational or positive message.
  • No more than 600 words.
  • The winning short stories will be published in a book of short stories.
  • The short story must be thought of and presented by the child/children and the parent/teacher must verify that the short story is the work of the child/children.
  • Teachers are able to facilitate the class as they would in a normal lesson but the work must be that of the child/children.
  • The short story should not include any form of prejudice, violence, bad language or anything else that would be deemed inappropriate.
  • All short stories must be submitted online, or mailed to Barfoot & Thompson by Friday 2 June 2017 at: Barfoot & Thompson Young Authors Challenge, PO Box 4078, Auckland 1010 or dropped in to any branch.
  • Winning students will work with our chosen author(s) to lightly proof and edit the story.
  • The winning individuals/classes must be available during term 3 for a workshop with the author.
  • The winning individuals/classes must be available for publicity as and when required.
  • The winners will not see the book of short stories until the day it is released to the media.
  • The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  • The book will belong to Barfoot & Thompson and be our exclusive property.
